Proclaimed Richmond’s Best Business at The Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2021

We are proud to have won the highly-prized ‘best business in Richmond’ award at Richmond Chamber of Commerce annual Business Awards. A substantial business within the borough of Richmond Upon Thames, Petersham Nurseries employs more than 170 staff with 80% of them living within a five-mile radius.

  • Recognising our achievements throughout the challenges of 2021, we were also highly commended for ‘best business for environmental sustainability’, a nod to the team’s ethos of responsible sourcing, organic gardening, and waste management, having received a special newly created ‘Green Michelin star’ in January.
  • Keeping our doors open throughout the year, we have done our utmost to support our suppliers, neighbourhood, and chosen charity – The Vineyard Community Centre.
  • With 170 staff and 80% of them living within a five-mile radius of Richmond.
  • Remaining open as a Garden Centre we became a much-needed amenity for visitors during lockdown.
  • As lockdowns were announced throughout the pandemic, we emptied our fridges and donated everything we could to The Vineyard Community Centre.
  • During the first lockdown, the team demonstrated their resilience by transforming the restaurant into a grocery store offering collection for the local community and deliveries for those further afield. The grocery store provided fresh and store cupboard ingredients from long-standing suppliers and the family farm, helping customers to stock up on essentials at a time when produce was extremely limited.
  • Further reinventions as the country emerged from the first lockdown included picnic boxes packed up for guests to take away and enjoy in nearby Richmond Park, Petersham Meadow or along the river, at a time when indoor dining was still prohibited.
  • Next our team took advantage of its nationwide reputation and the trend for restaurant food finished off at home by launching a meal kit service, delivered to doorsteps across the Country. Local regulars as well as customers who had never before been able to visit the Richmond institution could suddenly dine from the Petersham Nurseries Café in the comfort of their own homes.

Richmond Chamber of Commerce said,

An excellent win by Petersham Nurseries… they delivered excellent business results in very trying times.” The awards were judged by a panel of expert business leaders, including former chair of BAFTA Anne Morrison and CEO of Richmond Chamber of Commerce Anne Newton. The awards were presented by our local MP Sarah Olney with the leader of the Council, Gareth Roberts.

Gael said, “It has been a challenging year for everyone in Richmond, so we’re especially proud and humbled to have won this award in 2021. For us, the real success of the last year has been being able to keep our doors open and to retain our staff through the pandemic.

Francesco adds, “For twenty years our business has been rooted in Richmond – we have always responsibly served our community, hired locally and re-invested in the neighbourhood. It’s an honour to see our work in such a difficult year commended by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Business Awards” and Richmond Council.
