BATCH #001 is an Organic Beauty house, powered by the bees, the land and the seas, with the utmost love and respect for the magical properties of beeswax, and a powerful purpose to protect and halt the decline of the honeybee and our natural world.
Tell us about you, how did get to where you are?
I was inspired by my allergy and eczema prone daughters, to create our range of completely natural and organic products they could use to soothe and repair their inflamed and irritated skin – but couldn’t find anything.
Both of my girls suffered terribly with eczema and allergies from birth, endless doctors’ appointments and even late-night trips to A&E. Having always had dry skin and sometimes psoriasis myself, I was looking for something completely natural, to help ease our skin flare-ups and lock in moisture (something which is crucial for eczema sufferers).
The really frustrating part was the enormous ingredient list on all the moisturisers I was using, which had so many preservatives, sulphates and parabens in. It just didn’t seem logical to be putting all of these chemicals onto their already sensitive skin.
We were in the middle of a particularly bad flare up, visiting a beekeeper friend in Dorset, who told me about the incredible, natural properties and benefits in beeswax. I had no idea that beeswax was revered by our ancestors for its magical properties. Used in skincare, it hydrates, conditions, soothes and repairs the skin, and promotes skin regeneration, creating a hydrating, long lasting protective barrier against environmental pollutants. Beeswax is combined with an assortment of other natural ingredients creating a potent remedy.
I have since become obsessed with it and here’s why…
- Naturally aromatic
- 100% natural and renewable resource
- And it’s the healthiest candle you can use – it burns cleanly, slowly and without smoke, toxins or pollutants
My beekeeper friend had stunningly aromatic beeswax candles burning, completely free from toxic paraffin wax and synthetic fragrance oils, which the majority of the big candle brands used, and I was inspired to start experimenting, not only by creating The 100% Beeswax Candle but also to look into how this wonderful wax could be used in skin care, considering it’s loaded with natural anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties.
I created our range of Organic Beeswax Balms to soothe and protect the skin, and then went on to create our Salt & Oil Bath Soaks – FINALLY a bath soak which combines therapeutic Dead Sea Salts and Pink Himalayan Salts AND organic oils to cleanse, soften and moisturise your skin. Like a spa at home and is particularly beneficial if you have dry skin or skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
How would you describe your work in three words?
Powered By Nature
Where do you feel most inspired and who inspires you?
My inspiration – my 2 daughters and the bee. This tiny creature is so vital, industrious and intelligent. I’m in complete awe of her and inspired by her every day.
I feel most inspired in nature, and particularly near water, whether that’s the coastline of the UK, with Dorset and Cornwall being particular favourites, or by lakes – we love the northern Lake District, for its wild nature, beautiful mountains (Blencathra is my favourite) and stunning lakes – Derwentwater and Ullswater are particularly beautiful.
I also love nature in an urban setting – and am inspired by the fact that bees can thrive on the top of buildings in the middle of central London. They even survived the fire at Notre Dame.
All of our products are inspired by nature – powered by the bees, the land and the seas. We are proud to use only 100% natural and organic ingredients, with everything ethically sourced and cruelty free. And I’ve come to realise that we ARE nature, we aren’t separate to her. We need to look after her, nurture her, if we, ourselves, are to survive.
What is your creative process?
My starting point is to create 100% natural and organic products for myself and my family, that we use every day. They are simple, multipurpose with integrity, and respect for their natural ingredients and the handmade traditional process of making them.
I use as few ingredients as possible, each working hard to bring maximum benefit, and all ethically sourced and cruelty free, without water – so no need for preservatives – sulphates, parabens or other chemicals.
My products are all designed to help those who may be sensitive to allergens or have sensitive skin / dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, but who still want beautifully designed, luxurious, and most importantly, effective natural products with no nasties!
The provenance and integrity of my ingredients are of the upmost importance to me – from the cold pressed organic oils, to the certified Dead Sea Salts and Pink Himalayan Salts, to working with micro beekeepers, who treat their bees as nature intended – all cruelty free, ethically sourced and helping to halt the decline of the honeybee.
Working with beeswax is complicated, and it’s taken a long time to perfect the products, which has also been part of the joy. Beeswax is an enigma – on one hand there is a pure simplicity to beeswax products, especially the beeswax candle, which essentially is a cotton wick, glass jar, and beeswax. However, it is incredibly difficult to perfect. The composition of beeswax changes depending on the flowers the bees have pollinated, so its structure is different every time. This means that it may need a different sized wick, it may burn differently, smell differently, behave differently when it burns. This has taught me that perfection is not something to aspire to, and in fact, we cannot control nature, we have to surrender to her. We celebrate the differences and imperfections as part of the unique character of beeswax.
What materials do you most like to work with? Does it differ depending on subject?
Beeswax! Organic, cold pressed oils and Dead Sea Salts and Pink Himalayan Sea Salts.
I’m inspired by how much positive influence natural ingredients can have over our wellbeing. From all of the amazing properties of beeswax, to the organic, cold pressed essential oils, which are not only brilliant for aromatherapy purposes, to change your mood for the better, but can also help your skin, some, such as tea tree and lavender are naturally antibacterial and antiseptic, others such as apricot kernel, are wonderfully hydrating and moisturising.
I’m also blown away by Prickly Pear Seed Oil, which I discovered in Morocco, its properties are like a roll call of everything that’s good for our skin – it has the highest concentration of vitamin E of any other oil, packed with essential fatty acids including Omega 6 and 9, amino acids, Vitamin K… the list goes on!
What’s your greatest achievement?
My children and being able to create something that helps them and their skin that they use every day.
What does the next few years look like for you and what are you most excited about?
We are so excited that since launching in September, our products have won awards! It’s great to know that people love them and that our products are really working for them. I’m looking forward to bringing the BATCH #001 collection to more people, and hopefully helping others who are in the same situation as I was with my children.
There are some exciting collaborations and also new product launches too, which I’m very excited about. However, everything will stay true to our core values and beliefs – 100% natural and organic products that help you and your skin. Ethically sourced, cruelty free, powered by the bees, the land and the seas.
