Discover the mesmerising art of handcrafted marbled paper, create your own unique designs and assemble a beautiful empire lampshade.

Founded by designer Florence Saumarez and based in Somerset, Inq specialises in designing and producing hand-marbled papers and products.

Combining traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic Florence creates beautiful papers and homewares that sit as proudly in Georgian townhouses as in industrial loft apartments.

During an interactive day within an elegant glasshouse in Richmond you will learn about the heritage behind the ancient craft of marbling. Under Florence's expert guidance, try your hand at the mesmerising, enchanting and somewhat mindful experience of connecting water, paper and ink to create your own handcrafted paper and beautiful lampshade. Choose your own unique combinations of colour, shapes and patterns and capture them on paper. Gouache paints are favoured over modern acrylics, to create marbled papers with a characteristic richness and deep velvety finish.

During the morning session and closely led by Florence, participants will make 8 x A3 unique marbled papers to take home.

While your papers are drying, enjoy a delicious, seasonal lunch from our Teahouse. During the afternoon you will set to work on your lampshade. First choosing your template from ready marbled papers in a variety of colours and patterns. Each participant will make an empire shaped shade suitable for use with a lamp base and pendant with complementing binding tape and ivory lining (20cm top diameter x 30cm bottom diameter x 20cm high). A shade of this size would normally retail through at £90

At the end of the day and after tea and cake from the Teahouse, head home with the fruits of your labour and a new found skill. For those wishing to practice further at home, Florence will be selling Inq marbling box sets, complete with all that you will need to continue marbling at home.

Please note: Participants must bring their own apron and wear suitable clothing and footwear. The process of making marbled paper is messy and clothes and shoes may get splashed.
