Create a Bee Nursery With Your Children This Father's Day

16th June 2019 , Richmond

A fun, educational and hands on Father's Day activity

About
Encourage bees into your garden by creating a miniature bee-nursery for solitary bees with your children this Father’s Day. The solitary bee amazingly knows to lay females furthest within the new home and males nearer the entrance (as the men emerge first). Before the bee leaves her offspring to hatch alone, she provides each of them with a food ball of pollen and nectar and separates each egg within its own compartment of the home. When the time is right, they break their way out and as many as 30 little bees might be born from one season in the bee nursery!

Bring along a plastic bottle that you’ve saved from your recycle bin and turn it into something useful while enjoying a fun and educational activity.

Pick up a bee friendly flower spotter sheet and explore Petersham Nurseries and the surrounding area looking for feastibale flora for this important garden pollenator.

This workshop is hosted by Petersham Nurseries in partnership with Environment Trust who strive to educate, empower and mobilise people to improve, preserve and protect their neighbourhood for the benefit of nature and people everywhere.

Ticket price includes:

* A place for 1 adult together with up to 2 children (additional child £10 thereafter payable on the day)

* Materials for 1 bee-nursery although we ask that you bring along 1 500ml plastic bottle (saved from your recycling bin)

* Homemade lemonade, water and biscuits

* A flower spotter sheet, a factsheet and a packet of bee friendly wildflower seeds

This workshop is best suited for children of 5 and older, although we welcome younger children and colouring sheets will be provided.
Please note that Petersham Nurseries is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, right next to the National Trust owned Petersham Meadow (cows will be in the meadow at this time of year), the River Thames and Richmond Park. Make the most of your day this Father’s Day and explore not only the nursery but also the natural environment close by.

NB. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Please note, parking is restricted in the surrounding area and we encourage our visitors to travel via alternative means of transport whenever possible.
