The scope of use for edible flowers extends far beyond just the decorative. They can be used to infuse, flavour, and preserve to name just a few of their many uses. Our Head Chef and horticultural experts will guide you through how to grow, select and cook with edible flowers. The lunch, in our restaurant will be interactive. Celebrating our heritage and traditions, this workshop focuses on the informal yet distinctive style of garden that has become known as the ‘cottage garden’. While the earliest cottage gardens were more practical than they have become today. Amanda Brame, our horticultural expert will discuss and demonstrate how to create your very own cottage garden, concentrating how to skilfully design the irregularity that is so prominent in the cottage garden style. Join Amanda Brame for our second seasonal all day workshop devoted to the Kitchen Garden. During this workshop we look at how to keep your kitchen garden active through the last of the summer weeks, and leading into autumn and winter. We begin discussing late sowing options for early September, whilst the ground is still warm, as well as sharing our expert knowledge on hardy crops for winter and protecting your plot against frost. Autumn is also a key time to prepare your plot for the next growing season, from replenishing nutrients in the soil – to planning your planting for a spring harvest. This event includes a tour of the Petersham House kitchen garden, where you will be introduced to soil preparation and maintenance. After lunch, the afternoon session will introduce you to the art of sowing successional salad and vegetable crops, drawing on Amanda’s years of experience as a kitchen gardener and allotmenter. Not only in our shops and restaurants, but also in our gardens and hedgerows, where plants have been introduced from all over the world. Claudio, our resident foraging expert will introduce you to many native species (30%) and many foreign species (70%) that have found their way into the UK over the past couple of centuries with various positive benefits. Focusing late summer fruits and berries, to be paired with cheese in his demonstration, this event will include talk and demonstration will last 90 minutes and an hour long foraging walk. (NB.
