A Family Business

1970

Petersham Nurseries, a local garden centre, was carved out of the Petersham House grounds in the 1970's.

1997

Gael & Francesco Boglione moved into Petersham House with their family.

2000

Threatened by demolition and property developers Gael & Francesco acquired the neighbouring Petersham Nurseries and began renovations.

2004

After extensive restoration works, the nurseries re-opened in 2004 completely transformed. For the first time, furniture, gifts and antiques were found amongst the plants which adorned the greenhouses, and in a ramshackle wooden teahouse pastries and homemade cakes were on offer.

In the summer of 2004, Gael & Francesco decided to open a casual and charming restaurant, Petersham Nurseries Café, with Skye Gyngell installed as head chef.

The intervening years saw the business grow and flourish as Petersham Nurseries developed an international reputation and built a loyal customer base. Gael & Francesco have cultivated the space, demonstrating an innate ability for recognising and drawing out the beauty in the simplest of things. In the last years Gael & Francesco have taken a step back from the business allowing their children, Petersham's next generation, to forge a bright future for the Nurseries and Petersham offshoots.

2011

Understandably, 2011 and 2012 were busy years for the family and the business as this adjustment took place. Petersham Nurseries Café was awarded its first Michelin star in 2011 under the direction of Skye and in 2012 retained the honour with the help of Australian chef Greg Malouf. 2013 Gael & Francesco announce their new culinary team. In a characteristically unconventional move, they have assembled a brigade lead by culinary director Lucy Boyd, whose exceptional produce knowledge, English culinary background and lifelong affection for Italian flavours, having lived in the country for two years, combine with our kitchen’s well-honed cooking skills.

The teahouse has evolved to now offer a seasonally inspired, Italianate lunch menu, as well as daily homemade cakes, loose whole leaf teas and filter coffee. Horticulturally, the nurseries expanded with the reopening of the Greenhouse III to extend the onsite propagation alongside the expansion of the cutting and kitchen gardens directed by Lucy Boyd, whilst the development of the community and education based Petersham Platform sees the Nurseries' fundamental ethos central to the growth within our walls opened up to those outside it.

The success and ripening can be attributed to the ideas and determination of eldest daughter Lara Boglione. Since 2011 Lara has been the driving force behind the development of the Nurseries. Her passion lies in sustainability, gastronomy, agriculture and education, an ethos that is spread across all business functions. Lara explains: “We hope to have created a place of calm, away from the bustle of London, somewhere that respects and is in tune with nature and positive living”.

2013

Meanwhile, Anna Boglione with co-founder Louis Waymouth established Petersham Playhouse. Using the backdrop of Petersham House at the outset, though they now perform in unusual and diverse venues across the UK, their venture showcases and blends works from some of our most deft contemporary writers, performers, musicians and dancers.

2013 sees Lara introduce Petersham Cellar, a project to promote an ever evolving selection of hand-picked fine Italian wines to the discerning British public.

2014

Bordering Devon, Somerset and Dorset, Haye Farm owned and run by Harry Boglione – son of Gael and Francesco Boglione - was founded in 2014. At the forefront of supporting British farmers and an avid supporter of the Slow Food movement, Harry grows, harvests and sells only organic produce to his customers. He supplies Gloucester Old Spot pigs, chickens, rabbit, ducks and a whole host of delicious organic vegetables to our own restaurant Petersham Nurseries Café – as well as to a number of other prestigious London restaurants. For 2016 he embarks on a new project to grow our favourite British grown stems to supply our Petersham Nurseries floristry workshop series, including several varieties of beautiful dahlias - our signature Petersham flower.
